Mattress Cleaning Adelaide
We clean mattresses at your home across Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa. The clean treats stains, urine marks, odours and the dust and sweat that build up in the fabric, using a method suited to your type of mattress. People usually call us for a reason: an accident or spill, a smell that won't go away, a second-hand bed, or a move in or out. Arthur, the owner, answers most calls himself and can give you an approximate price straight away.
What builds up in a mattress
Everyone sweats while they sleep, and that moisture goes into the mattress along with skin flakes and dust. Dust mites feed on the skin flakes, and their droppings are a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Spills and accidents add stains and smells on top. Over the years this collects inside the fabric and padding, where washing the sheets never reaches. A mattress protector slows it down, but it doesn't remove what is already there.
What a clean will and won't do
A clean lifts surface dirt, sweat residue, dust and most fresh or moderately old stains, and it takes out much of the odour held in the fabric and top layers. It can't reach everything deep inside a thick mattress, it won't fix sagging or worn springs, and it isn't pest control, so it won't remove bed bugs. If someone in your house has allergies, a clean reduces the dust and mite droppings near the surface, where they're most likely to be disturbed, but it won't make the mattress allergen-free.
How we clean a mattress
We start by looking at the mattress. Innerspring, foam, latex, pillow-top and hybrid mattresses all handle moisture differently, so we check the type, read the care label if there is one, and test a hidden spot for colourfastness. Then we vacuum the surface to lift loose dust, pre-treat any stains, and clean with a method that suits the mattress.
Where it can take it, we use hot water extraction, which pushes hot water and cleaning solution into the fabric and pulls it straight back out with the dirt it has lifted. Foam holds water, so on foam and memory foam we use a low-moisture method that doesn't soak the padding. Our technicians are trained and certified through ACRA, IICRC and ITI.
Stains and odours
Different marks need different treatment. Fresh spills and accidents come out best, so call as soon as you can. Until we arrive, blot the area with a dry cloth and don't add water, which pushes the mark deeper into the padding.
Urine is the hardest, because it soaks into the padding and leaves both a stain and a smell, and the older it is, the more it has bonded with the fibres. Sweat yellowing and drink stains usually respond well. Blood lifts best while it's fresh and is difficult once dry. Before we start, we tell you whether a mark is likely to come out completely or only fade, and whether a faint smell might remain.
What we clean
We clean single, double, queen and king mattresses, kids' beds, bunks and guest room beds. Most jobs are done in your home on the bed itself, so nothing needs to be moved or transported. We also clean mattresses for holiday rentals and guest accommodation, including in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa, and we can add carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning to the same visit.
Price and booking
Price depends mainly on the size of the mattress, how heavily marked it is, and how many there are. We give an approximate price on the phone and confirm it once we've seen the mattress, before any work starts. Same-day or next-day bookings are often possible for a job this size.
Before we arrive, strip the bed, wash the sheets and mattress protector, and leave some room to work around the bed.
Clean it or replace it?
Cleaning makes sense for a mattress in decent shape that is dirty, stained or smells. It isn't the answer if the mattress sags, is lumpy, has broken springs, or is well past its life, which for most mattresses is somewhere between seven and ten years. Mould that has spread through the mattress, or a bed bug infestation, usually means replacing it. If you can't tell which side yours falls on, describe it when you call and we'll say plainly whether a clean is worth paying for.
Frequently asked questions
When can I sleep on the mattress again?
Most mattresses are dry enough to use by that evening or overnight, depending on the type, the weather and the airflow in the room. Foam and thick pillow-tops take longer. Don't remake the bed until the mattress is completely dry, since trapped moisture can lead to mould. A fan or an open window speeds it up. The products we use are safe for kids and pets once dry.
How often should a mattress be professionally cleaned?
Once a year suits most households. Every six months makes sense with young children, pets, or someone with allergies or asthma. A washable mattress protector between cleans helps.
Can you get urine out of a mattress?
Often, when it's fresh or hasn't soaked far. Old urine that has gone into the padding is harder, and a faint smell can stay even after the stain fades. We tell you what to expect before we start.
Can you clean a memory foam mattress?
Yes. Memory foam holds water and takes a long time to dry, so we use a low-moisture method and avoid soaking it.
Can you remove mould from a mattress?
Small surface spots can sometimes be treated. If mould has spread through the mattress, cleaning won't fully fix it, and replacing the mattress is the safer choice, particularly for anyone with asthma.
Does mattress cleaning get rid of bed bugs?
No, cleaning isn't pest control. If you suspect bed bugs, have a pest controller deal with them first, and call us afterwards if you still want the mattress cleaned.
